About you and this role
Dow has an exciting opportunity for an Analytical Research Technologist (m/f) in Optical Spectroscopy and Microscopy in the R&D Analytical Science group in Terneuzen, The Netherlands.

The group in Terneuzen is part of the global Core R&D Analytical Science organization that is delivering essential measurement science and problem-solving capabilities to accelerate manufacturing and research and development projects. The organization is critical to the success of many projects and activities in Dow ranging from innovative research for new product development and product/process improvements to resolving and avoiding production issues in manufacturing plants.

In the role of Analytical Research Technologist, you will apply and develop a range of advanced optical spectroscopy and potentially microscopy techniques, set up prediction models to provide technical support and solutions to diverse R&D, product development and manufacturing projects. You will work on studies in collaboration with research and technical development groups in Europe, USA and Asia.

For this position we are seeking a candidate who has excellent problem-solving skills and theoretical and hands-on experience in FTIR and Raman. Microscopy knowledge is a plus.

 

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on assigned projects using working knowledge of scientific principles, theory and experimental design within optical spectroscopy and potentially microscopy. This includes safely executing analytical experiments, instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, new method or capability development and application, modeling and timely and high-quality reporting. The role has a strong “hands-on” component.
  • Delivering, in close collaboration with other researchers, high-end analytical expertise to support various manufacturing and research projects.
  • Develop experimental plans and perform standard and non-routine tasks to support a wide range of innovative activities for various businesses. The applicant will need to be capable of working on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Keeps current with developments in relevant areas of optical spectroscopy and others when necessary. Generates value through innovation in her/his work area. Brings ideas for new changes to implement in the current work processes.
  • Collaborates effectively across the department and beyond with local and global researchers; presents research project updates and demonstrates capability to influence audience with effective presentation skills.
  • Appropriately documents work in the form of internal reports/presentations. Coaches and mentors others to write clear, concise and timely technical reports to document results and completion of projects within set timeline goals.
  • Train new employees to start experiments to understand, communicate and continuously improve the capability of our methods and laboratory.
  • Participate on global teams to standardize and improve technology and work processes.
  • Keep customers satisfaction high with delivering timely and quality data while prioritizing and completing work based on relative importance and urgency from the clients.
  • Understand and follow appropriate EH&S standards, policies.

 

Qualifications

  • BSc. or MSc. Degree in Analytical Chemistry or organic chemistry with a strong background in analytical characterization techniques.
  • 5 years working experience in optical spectroscopy
  • Proficiency in laboratory equipment set-up, operation and chemical handling
  • Good team player with ability to successfully partner with team members and contacts from multiple backgrounds in a global R&D organization.
  • Self-driven personality and excellent interpersonal skills. The candidate must be keen to collaborate with internal clients to deliver effective solutions.
  • Good computer skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing in English.
  • Strong focus on and commitment to safety.
  • Fluent in English is crucial.

 

Preferred skills

  • Knowledge and experience in microscopy techniques is a plus.
  • Being fluent in Dutch is a plus.
